Mary Trump Says Donald Trump's Freedom 250 'Almost Certainly' Diverted Donors

Her logic: a flat denial from Freedom 250 is itself proof the allegations are true, though the underlying report relies in part on unnamed whistleblowers.

Mary Trump, the clinical psychologist, author and estranged niece of President Donald Trump, said in an episode of her podcast, The Mary Trump Show, titled "The Secret Money Behind American Power," that allegations Freedom 250 redirected donations meant for the America250 commission are "almost certainly" true — reasoning that the group's denial proves the claims.

The allegations come from a report released July 2 by Democratic staff on the House Natural Resources Committee. The report, which draws in part on unnamed whistleblowers alongside sworn testimony and internal documents and has not yet been adopted by the full committee, alleges some donors who intended to give to America250 were instead provided with Freedom 250's banking information, NPR reported. Mary Trump said the report also alleges other donors were pressured to redirect their contributions.

Freedom 250 has denied the allegations, and Mary Trump treated that denial as confirmation. "Freedom 250 called the allegations categorically false and a partisan smear, which means that the allegations are true. Almost certainly," she said. A denial is not evidence either way, and the report's authors — including Representative Jared Huffman of California, the panel's top Democrat — stop short of asserting a crime occurred.

What the House Democrats' Freedom 250 Report Alleges

Congress created the bipartisan U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, which operates as America250, in 2016 to plan the country's 250th anniversary. Donald Trump announced Freedom 250 in December 2025 as a separate effort with the White House and the National Park Foundation, the congressionally chartered charity that houses Freedom 250 as a subsidiary limited liability company, ABC News reported.

The report argues the alleged misdirection could amount to wire fraud, according to NPR. It does not say how much money was diverted. The report also says the National Park Foundation's donor structure "conceals the identities of those who give and the benefits they may be promised in return," and its findings, NPR reported, draw on unnamed whistleblowers, sworn testimony and internal Freedom 250 documents.

Freedom 250 has countered that no federal funds were earmarked for one entity over the other, according to NPR. The National Park Foundation said in a statement that "Solicitations made by Freedom 250 to potential donors were done in a clear and transparent manner," as quoted by University of Dayton accounting professor Sarah Webber in The Conversation.

America250 Funding Gap: $150 Million Appropriated, $25 Million Received

The suspicion driving the report is a widening gap between what Congress set aside for the anniversary and what America250 has received. The July 2025 spending law appropriated $150 million to Interior for 250th-anniversary events, according to ABC News. America250 said in a written report to Congress that it had expected to receive $100 million of that money but had received only $25 million as of January 2026, NOTUS reported.

Meanwhile, NOTUS reported on June 1 that Interior had awarded $68.3 million in grants to the National Park Foundation for "A250 events" as of April 29 — a foundation that had received less than $8 million in federal grants since 2009 before Freedom 250 was created. In an April 2026 report to Congress, America250 said it faced a $100 million funding shortfall.

The $150 million was appropriated to the Interior Department for 250th-anniversary events under the July 2025 spending law, according to ABC News. America250 said in a written report to Congress that it had expected to receive $100 million of that money but had received only $25 million as of January 2026, and in an April 2026 report to Congress said it faced a $100 million funding shortfall, according to NOTUS.

Freedom 250 Corporate Sponsorships and Access to Donald Trump

Freedom 250 has pursued private money on a scale America250 cannot match. Sponsorship packages range from $500,000 to more than $10 million, according to ABC News, and the top tier includes an invitation to a private reception hosted by Donald Trump and a speaking role at a July Fourth event.

Mary Trump described the tiers in similar terms. "Sponsorship packages reportedly range from five hundred thousand to more than ten million dollars with benefits that could include branding, VIP access, and at the highest levels. Invitations to a private reception hosted by Donald," she said. "And I'm sure that was all to benefit the American people, right? No," she added. "It was to gain influence over the only president in American history who has been so openly and egregiously for sale."

She also referred to "the hundreds of millions of dollars raised for these ridiculous events. On September 14, Democratic Senators Alex Padilla, Elizabeth Warren, Adam Schiff and Richard Blumenthal demanded that Freedom 250 disclose its donors, writing that the group "appears to be yet another slush fund for wealthy corporations and insiders to buy influence with the White House."

Interior Seeks $10 Million More for Freedom 250 Events

Taxpayers may also cover costs the private sponsorships did not. On July 29, Interior asked Congress for an additional $10 million to reimburse the National Park Service for three Freedom 250 events on the National Mall — the Rededicate 250 prayer gathering, the 16-day Great American State Fair and the July Fourth fireworks — the Washington Examiner reported.

Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon, the top Democrat on the Senate Interior appropriations subcommittee, revealed the request in a letter to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. "It is unacceptable to ask the American people to bail out Freedom 250," Merkley wrote, according to NPR.

What Happens Next

The committee's Republican majority has not adopted the report or announced any action on it. Webber wrote in The Conversation that the alleged conduct could also raise charitable-solicitation questions under District of Columbia law, and that enforcement could fall to District of Columbia regulators, the Federal Trade Commission, the IRS or the Justice Department, none of which has publicly confirmed an inquiry.

Democrats have made alleged self-dealing a central midterm argument. PolitiKool's polling average gives Democrats a 48.2 percent to 41.5 percent edge on the generic congressional ballot, and PolitiKool's polling average puts Donald Trump's approval at 38.8 percent against 58.2 percent disapproval. Whether the Freedom 250 allegations move beyond a partisan staff report — or whether the full accounting of its donors ever becomes public — remains unresolved.
