Mary Trump Says GOP 'Family Values' Talk Clashes With Officials' Abuse Cases
Three of the four pleaded guilty, but Dennis Hastert's plea was for bank structuring, not abuse.

Mary Trump said the Republican Party's long-running claim to be the party of family values and child protection does not hold up against the records of its own officials. She pointed to four Republicans: two who pleaded guilty to child sexual abuse material offenses, Dennis Hastert, who pleaded guilty to illegally structuring bank withdrawals to conceal hush-money payments over abuse allegations, and one charged with sexual exploitation of a child.
In an "Under the Radar" episode of The Mary Trump Podcast, the president's niece said Republicans "have spent decades using words like groomer and predator against teachers, librarians, LGBTQ+ Americans, doctors, and their political opponents." Republicans keep pressing the theme ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections. One host on the left recently called that theme "one of the biggest lies".
Mary Trump on Steve Hilton's 'Just Try It' Ad
She opened with a clip from "Just Try It," a campaign ad for Steve Hilton, the Republican candidate for governor of California. In the ad, two young women sit on a bed in front of a Pride flag, and one coaxes the other into filling out a mail-in ballot for Hilton. Some of the loudest criticism has come from conservatives, CalMatters reported. Michael Gates, the Republican candidate for attorney general, objected to what he called the ad's "sexualized portrayal of young women."
Mary Trump was careful on one point. "To be clear, there is no evidence that either actor in the ad is a minor," she said. She called the spot "a remarkable choice for a political movement that has spent years accusing everyone else of sexualizing children."
"I think it's safe to say that they're throwing stones in glass houses," she said.
Hilton has defended the ad as a way to reach Californians who have never voted Republican. He trails Democrat Xavier Becerra by 21.8 points in PolitiKool's polling average.
What the Court Records Show
The cases she cited differ widely in charge, outcome and stage.
| Official | Office held | Charge | Plea or status | Sentence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Justin Eichorn | Minnesota state senator | Attempted possession of child pornography | Pleaded guilty | 16 months |
| RJ May III | South Carolina state representative | Distribution of child sexual abuse material | Pleaded guilty to five counts | 17.5 years |
| David Pritt | West Virginia delegate | Sexual exploitation of a child, coercion and enticement, witness tampering | Indicted; pleaded not guilty | None |
| Dennis Hastert | U.S. House speaker | Illegally structuring bank withdrawals | Pleaded guilty | 15 months |
Eichorn was sentenced on September 23. He had been arrested in a March 2025 sting after messaging a police decoy who told him she was 17. Prosecutors asked for five years. "He was only sentenced to 16 months in prison," Mary Trump said.
May was sentenced on January 14. U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie said May "claimed to be an advocate for children at the State House but was their abuser behind closed doors."
Pritt faces allegations, not a conviction. A federal grand jury indicted him on three felony counts after his arrest in July. Prosecutors allege conduct that ran from March 2024 through January 2026. He resigned from the legislature, and his school district later fired him. He has pleaded not guilty.
Mary Trump Faults Fox News Over Dennis Hastert
Hastert, the longest-serving Republican House speaker, died at his home the weekend of Oct. 3, at 84. The statute of limitations had run out on the abuse itself, so he was prosecuted over the hush-money withdrawals instead. At his 2016 sentencing, U.S. District Judge Thomas Durkin called him a "serial child molester".
Mary Trump played a Fox News obituary segment that said Hastert's reputation "was later tainted" by molestation allegations.
"Tainted, you say. The man sexually abused minor children in his charge. He was a monster," she said.
She went further: "And many, many, many Republicans knew what was going on, but Hastert served their purposes." She did not name anyone or offer evidence for that claim.
A Pattern, or Individual Cases?
She also urged Attorney General Todd Blanche to comply with the Epstein Files Transparency Act or be impeached.
She gave no evidence of party-wide complicity. The four cases she cited were prosecuted as crimes by individuals.
Pritt has pleaded not guilty and is presumed innocent.
