CNN’s Kaitlan Collins takes subtle jab at Trump after barrage of insults

CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins, who hosts The Source and serves as the network's chief White House correspondent, appeared to answer President Donald Trump's repeated insults with a small visual gag. When she interviewed director Alex Gibney last Friday, a mug beside her carried the message "America Needs Nasty Women." The slogan echoes the term Trump aimed at Hillary Clinton during a 2016 debate, which protesters and feminist activists later claimed as their own. The hashtag "ImANastyWoman" spread widely on X during that campaign, according to The Independent.

Trump has directed the word at Collins as well. In December 2025, he labeled her "nasty" on Truth Social after she raised the price tag of his ballroom project. In June 2026, he said she never smiles and has hatred in her eyes. In an October interview with TIME, while complaining about press coverage, he called her very average and the unhappiest young person he had ever seen. Collins read that remark on air and noted that it had come unprompted.

She generally does not trade barbs with the president. On The Daily Show in July, she said she wants attention on the questions and the non-answers, not on her own reaction.
