‘Con man’ and ‘cowardly’: Personal insults fly in heated Michigan, Georgia, Maine Senate debates

Latest News CNN · THE GUARDIAN POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

CNN · The Guardian and The Guardian report that Thursday night brought sharp personal exchanges between Senate rivals in Georgia, Michigan and Maine, three contests that bear on which party controls the chamber. The Guardian adds that a Democratic majority would require four pickups from Republicans.

In Michigan, Republican Mike Rogers cast Democrat Abdul El-Sayed as a "con man" and challenged his standing as a physician. CNN notes El-Sayed has a Columbia University medical degree but works in public health rather than treating patients. On tariffs, Rogers said he phoned Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick this week seeking a Canada deal, but El-Sayed said the shift reflected "sagging poll numbers."

In Georgia, Senator Jon Ossoff pressed Republican Representative Mike Collins on tariffs and on staffers with white nationalist views. Asked about his son-in-law's posts, Collins responded that it concerned his family and said he condemns racism, The Guardian reports. In Maine, Senator Susan Collins defended her integrity against Democrat Troy Jackson, who stressed heating oil and energy costs.
