FBI Foils Alleged ISIS Plot To Massacre Mall Of America Shoppers
Federal prosecutors have accused an 18-year-old Minnesota man of plotting a shooting at the Mall of America in support of ISIS, and agents say they stopped him before it could happen. Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, a U. S. citizen of Somali descent, was taken into custody Tuesday after allegedly meeting a person he thought belonged to ISIS to buy an AK-47 rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition. Charges announced Wednesday include attempting to aid a foreign terrorist group. U. S. Attorney Daniel Rosen said the case shows the ISIS threat remains active, and he credited the FBI and Bloomington police, according to Daily Caller.
According to court records cited by Christopher Dotson, who leads the FBI's Minneapolis Field Office, Mohamud swore allegiance to ISIS more than a year ago and sought to die as a martyr. Dotson said Mohamud turned to a domestic attack because he believed he could not travel overseas to fight. Rosen said Mohamud wanted to kill between 30 and 60 people.
An affidavit attached to the complaint quotes messages in which Mohamud allegedly targeted the mall because of its supposed Jewish ownership, and said he hoped to kill white people so police would shoot him rather than send him to prison.
