FBI says source of its jobs portal breach still unknown as hackers allege employee data compromised

Latest News FOX NEWS POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

The FBI said Thursday it is trying to determine whether a breach of its FBIJobs.gov portal began inside the bureau or with an outside vendor, after a hacking group claimed to have stolen personal information belonging to FBI employees. In a post on X, the bureau said it was "actively and aggressively investigating" the matter and coordinating with third-party providers that support the jobs site to limit any fallout, while acknowledging the origin of the intrusion remains undetermined, according to Fox News.

The extortion group ShinyHunters has claimed credit, telling Reuters it pulled records covering nearly every FBI agent along with people who had applied to join the bureau. Reuters reported that the material it reviewed included agents' identities, home addresses, Social Security numbers and job assignments, with some entries also listing relatives' names.

Jason Pack, a retired FBI supervisory special agent who now runs Media Rep Global Strategies, told Fox News Digital there is currently no sign the intrusion reached classified investigative systems, calling that distinction crucial to gauging the incident's severity. He said pairing an employee's identity with details of their job function could let an adversary craft far more convincing scams, and warned that exposed assignment data could also pose counterintelligence risks if obtained by a foreign intelligence service.
