Gun-Control Groups Ask Supreme Court To Reverse Landmark Ruling

Two advocacy groups are urging the Supreme Court to go beyond the semiautomatic-rifle dispute before it and discard its 2008 decision in Heller v. District of Colombia, which struck down Washington, D.C.'s handgun ban as a Second Amendment violation. The request came in friend-of-the-court filings submitted Wednesday, as the justices prepare to take up challenges from Cook County, Illinois, which includes Chicago, and from Connecticut over restrictions on so-called assault weapons, according to Daily Caller.

Americans Against Gun Violence told the justices that Heller and the rulings flowing from it were egregiously flawed and harmful to public health. It maintained that civilian ownership of AR-15s lacks constitutional protection and cited Britain's strict gun laws as evidence that the Founders did not mean to safeguard an individual right to own guns. The American Enlightenment Project, in a filing by co-founder Robert Ludwig, asked the court to reconsider Heller, saying it produced a "gun crisis" in America.

According to the Supreme Court's website, about 40 briefs backed the challengers. Their authors include House members led by Republican Representative Andrew Clyde of Georgia, several senators, 27 states, the Justice Department and numerous pro-gun organizations.
