New polling released this week signals erosion in President Donald Trump's standing and dimming prospects for Republican candidates in several states pivotal to next year's fight for Senate control. A New York Times/Siena University survey of Maine, Michigan and New Hampshire found Senator Susan Collins clinging to just a three-point edge in Maine, a state Democrats have long counted as their best chance to flip a seat, even after Troy Jackson replaced Graham Platner as the Democratic nominee there, according to The Washington Post.

The same survey showed Democrats leading by five points in the open Senate races in both Michigan and New Hampshire. Trump's numbers were weak throughout: 63 percent of those surveyed disapproved of his overall job performance, and majorities in every state faulted his handling of the war in Iran and rising living costs.

A Marist poll of the Texas Senate race put Democrat James Talarico's advantage over Republican Ken Paxton at six points — a larger margin than other polls have shown. That survey, based on 1,139 registered voters with a margin of error of 4.4 points, also found 55 percent of Texans disapproving of Trump's job performance. Together, the four surveys covered Senate races in Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire and Texas — contests central to which party controls the chamber next year.
