Hochul reveals which election result would make her job 'a lot easier' — and it's not her own

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said her work would get "a lot easier" if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is voted out, telling Politico Magazine that the outcome would ease pressures she faces as the leader of the largest Jewish population outside Israel. She made the remark Tuesday, as Israelis voted in their first national election since the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre, one week ahead of U.S. midterms in which she is seeking another term, according to Fox News.

Hochul, a Democrat, said many of her constituents are anxious because antisemitism is sky-high, and she takes that personally. She recalled visiting Israel soon after Oct. 7, where she saw deep pain, and said she privately urged Israeli officials not to overreach. In her view, sympathy for Israel after the Hamas attack has been eroded by that overreach. She also said she does not think a safe Palestinian state serves Netanyahu's interest.

Other New York Democrats have gone further. In September, Mayor Zohran Mamdani accused Netanyahu of orchestrating genocide against Palestinians.

On the campaign front, a Siena Research Institute poll released Wednesday put Hochul ahead of Republican Bruce Blakeman by 14 points, 54% to 40%.
