Inside Georgia's push to rebuild trust in elections after Trump's false claims

Latest News PBS NEWSHOUR POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

Georgia officials are working to rebuild public confidence in how elections are run, as the Trump administration pushes to challenge election integrity and gain more control over how voting is conducted. PBS NewsHour reports that the state has been at the center of that fight since President Trump's false claims about the 2020 result there. Ahead of next month's midterms, Georgia has opened its election offices to the press and public. In Paulding County, workers test every machine, race and ballot, and Assistant Elections Director Lacy Dunn says the state is well prepared.

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican who refused to help Trump overturn the 2020 outcome, is serving his last term overseeing elections. He says his team talks daily with all 159 counties. He also says Georgia, like roughly 30 other states, declined to give the Justice Department sensitive voter data, such as Social Security numbers, because state law forbids it. He cites an audit finding the voter rolls 99. 8 percent accurate.

In January, the FBI searched Fulton County's election headquarters and took hundreds of boxes of 2020 records, yet nearly nine months later nobody has been charged.
