New York congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier was taken into custody Thursday during a demonstration against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's appearance at the United Nations General Assembly in Manhattan, her campaign said in social media posts accompanied by photos. Avila Chevalier, running as the Democratic nominee for New York's 13th District and backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, joined roughly 250 people who gathered at 1st Avenue and 39th Street; officers moved in once a group sitting down in the street would not clear out, and outlets put the total number detained at somewhere between 80 and 100, according to Fox News.

Avila Chevalier stood by her actions afterward, telling Bloomberg that Netanyahu "belongs at the Hague: not in the streets of New York City, and certainly not addressing the United Nations General Assembly." In an earlier post, her campaign accused the government of funding "a genocide against Palestinians" while neglecting domestic needs, and called for an end to arming Israel.

She was not alone in being detained. New York City Council members Chi Ossé and Alexa Avilés were swept up in the same arrests near the United Nations complex, and the Daily Mail identified actress Susan Sarandon among the demonstrators taken into custody that day.
