Man accused in plot to attack Texas Capitol building is released on bond

Latest News NBC NEWS POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

Texas authorities say they have stopped a planned violent attack on the state Capitol in Austin. The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed Wednesday that its officers were given credible information about an individual intending to carry out the assault, and that the scheme was foiled. The man accused in the matter has already been released from custody, according to NBC News.

To judge whether the threat was genuine and to piece together the surrounding circumstances, special agents in the department's Criminal Investigations Division collaborated with the FBI. The FBI's involvement was aimed at verifying the information the department had received. A suspect identified as Caldera was arrested and booked at the Bexar County Jail on a felony charge of making a terroristic threat against a public servant. He subsequently left custody after a $75,000 bond was set.

Agency leaders informed members of the Texas Legislature about both the threat and the arrest on Wednesday. The notification to lawmakers went out the same day the department went public. Despite the incident, the Capitol is keeping its normal hours for the public. Even so, the Department of Public Safety says it will maintain a larger law enforcement presence at the building going forward, aiming to protect the people who work there, those who visit, and state officials.
