Over 40% of names on DOJ's 'noncitizen' voter list are not on California's voter rolls, analysis finds

PBS NewsHour and ABC News report that an analysis by two University of California, Los Angeles data analysts found 8,880 of the 20,930 names on a Justice Department list of suspected noncitizen voters in California, or 42%, match no one in the state's current voter file. The review, submitted Saturday in a lawsuit by the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights and UCLA's Voting Rights Project, is the first outside look at a list the department has used to threaten election officials with prosecution. The department wants those voters' ballots separated during Election Day counting, according to PBS NewsHour · ABC News.

The researchers also identified at least 22 U. S. citizens on the list, and they estimated nearly 7,500 naturalized citizens were "highly likely" to be wrongly flagged. They said the removal of voter identification numbers made checking the names harder. Xavier Becerra, the Democratic candidate for governor, cosigned the filing.

ABC News adds that Bill Essayli, who runs the U. S. Attorney's office in Los Angeles, dismissed the analysis on X as "bogus." Justice Department spokesperson Kiersten V. Pels said ineligible ballots cancel out citizens' votes. The accounts say a federal judge barred further demands on Friday, and the administration is appealing.
