Redistricting isn't playing out how the GOP hoped. And, Brazil's Lula wins 4th term

Republicans' effort to protect their House majority through mid-decade map changes is faltering. President Donald Trump pushed GOP-led states to redraw congressional boundaries in their favor, hoping to blunt the usual midterm backlash against the party in power. Yet of the 15 districts reshaped for that purpose, the Cook Political Report currently ranks just five as likely or solid Republican, while most are toss-ups or tilt Democratic. NPR reports the party may have to pour millions into seats it counted on winning, and could lose them regardless. One example is North Carolina's 1st District, now considered a toss-up, where candidate Laurie Buckhout appeared with Trump at a Greenville rally.

Elsewhere, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured a fourth term as Brazil's president, beating Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, by over 4 million votes. No candidate who placed second in the opening round had won the presidency since democracy returned in 1989.

France saw more large antigovernment marches over the weekend, with more than 400,000 participants nationwide, over 100,000 of them in Paris.
