Senate hopeful's 'treading water' narrative crumbles under $500K campaign payouts to family

Dan Osborn, the independent candidate for U. S. Senate in Nebraska, has spent the past week telling voters his household is struggling with higher grocery and gas costs, yet his own campaign disclosures show he has steered more than $500,000 to relatives. On Sept. 24, at a press conference on Capitol Hill, he said his family is "treading water," and he repeated the point in an NBC News interview later that day, according to Fox News.

The payment total comes from two sources. Americans for Public Trust, a government ethics watchdog that has examined Osborn's spending before, tallied close to $480,000 going to him and his relatives from his campaign and linked political committees through the opening quarter of 2026. The group told Fox News Digital that number leaves out spending reported in the second-quarter filing submitted in July. Fox News Digital's own look at that filing turned up further family payments, lifting the sum past $500,000.

Most of the money went to his wife, Megan Osborn, who has been on the campaign's payroll since it began. Records also list payments to his daughter Georgia, whom Osborn has described as a part-time dancer needing help with bills; she was paid for staffing events and other campaign work. After the scrutiny, Megan Osborn left consulting firms in which she held a stake, which had been collecting thousands of dollars from his campaign funds, including his defunct 2024 account.
