'Squad' Democrat formally introduces bill to abolish ICE, Border Patrol and dismantle DHS

Latest News FOX NEWS POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

Illinois Democrat Delia Ramirez has put forward legislation that would break up the Department of Homeland Security and end the existence of both Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, the latter of which includes the Border Patrol. Introduced Tuesday, the measure is among the most far-reaching immigration proposals yet to come from the House's progressive wing, according to Fox News.

Called the Reimagining Safety Act, the bill would put a new Department of Community Safety where DHS stands now. Agencies such as TSA and FEMA would survive. Some customs and immigration duties would be handed to other federal departments, though CBP's enforcement apparatus would be removed. The bill also bars federal money for border walls starting in fiscal year 2027 and orders the military detention site at Guantánamo Bay shut within 60 days of becoming law.

Ramirez's office says her original cosponsors are Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Adelita Grijalva of Arizona and Jim McGovern of Massachusetts. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin rejected the idea in a statement to Fox News Digital last month, declaring that it will "NEVER" happen and saying 270,000 DHS employees keep Americans safe.
