Trump Admin Keeps Deportation Shield In Place For Thousands Of Foreigners

Roughly 100,000 Ukrainians and a much smaller group of Sudanese living in the United States will keep their legal permission to stay and work, after the Trump administration stepped in just as their Temporary Protected Status was due to lapse on Monday, CBS News reports. The move matters because the same administration has ended the status for far larger populations, according to Daily Wire.

The Department of Homeland Security told CBS it has not settled on a long-term course for either program and will act "at the appropriate time." Until then, enrollees keep their protections. CBS says the department also extended coverage for both groups a month earlier, when an earlier deadline approached.

The Biden administration created the Ukrainian designation in 2022 because of Russia's war. Federal data put enrollment above 100,000 in March 2025. Sudan's designation dates to 1997 and has been renewed repeatedly; nearly 1,800 Sudanese were covered as of that same month.

Elsewhere, the administration has terminated the status for over one million people from more than a dozen countries, among them Haiti, Venezuela, Syria and Afghanistan. CNN says officials are holding off on a final ruling about El Salvador.
