Trump faces prospect of impeachment if Democrats gain control

Latest News PBS NEWSHOUR POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

Tuesday's midterm elections will largely determine how the remainder of Donald Trump's second term unfolds. PBS NewsHour reports that a Republican loss of Congress would likely bring Democratic-led investigations of his administration and business interests, possibly another impeachment, and an early turn of attention toward the 2028 race. A GOP win, by contrast, would leave him stronger and more firmly in command of his party.

Trump chose to make the contest about himself, urging supporters to imagine him on the ballot. His team hoped that would energize backers who tend to stay home when he isn't a candidate. Democrats welcomed the approach, and Sen. Andy Kim of New Jersey said voters are indeed focused on the president. Trump also told an Oklahoma crowd he has grown skilled at defeating impeachment efforts, and he cited his veto power as a safeguard.

Democrats are already outlining targets. Rep. Robert Garcia of California, who would chair the House Oversight Committee, plans to examine immigration detention practices, the Trump family's business dealings and the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.
