Voters in most of the country now give President Donald Trump poor marks, a fresh state-level tracker from the online pollster Civiqs indicates, and the finding lands only weeks before the midterm elections. Among registered voters, disapproval beat approval in 39 states, including conservative ones such as Nebraska, Kentucky and Tennessee. Disapproval reached 57 percent in Texas and 54 percent in Florida. Approval led in just 11 states, every one of them a place that has backed him in each of the last three presidential races, according to The Independent.

The Independent ties the slide to anger over living costs and the war with Iran, which has run seven months, killed at least 18 service members and cost taxpayers more than $30 billion. AAA puts gasoline at $4.36 a gallon, compared with $2.98 just before the fighting began. An AP-NORC poll found only 17 percent approve of his handling of the cost of living, while Reuters/Ipsos measured his overall support at 32 percent in late September.

NBC News polling showed Democrats ahead by 9 points in the contest for Congress. Analyst Nate Silver argues that calling the race close is increasingly hard to defend. Trump has dismissed unfavorable polls as "fake."
