Trump's arch gets a late-night green light. Will a judge stop construction?

Latest News NPR POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

NPR, CNN and CBS News report that a federal judge has halted work on President Donald Trump's planned triumphal arch just after a planning panel gave it final clearance late Thursday. Judge Tanya Chutkan issued a temporary order barring the government from any construction-related activity for 14 days, and CBS News says she will explain her reasoning in a later opinion. The National Capital Planning Commission had voted 8-4 in favor, after a long public session in which most speakers opposed the project. The accounts differ on its length: NPR says nearly eight hours of testimony, CNN says more than eight and CBS News almost nine.

Veterans who served in Vietnam sued, as did D.C. and Virginia, contending Congress never authorized the monument. Commission members backing the arch countered, NPR reports, that Congress had already approved a pair of columns there in 1925. CBS News adds that the arch would reach 250 feet, take about three years to build, and have an unclear price tag. Representative Jared Huffman of California told the commission, "This arch would dishonor America, our ideals, and our laws."
