Trump’s DOJ is deploying election monitors — and Democrats are demanding answers

Latest News MS NOW POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

House Democrats are pressing the Justice Department for details on its plan to station 1,000 federal election observers before the midterms. Reps. Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Joe Morelle of New York, who lead their party on the Judiciary and Administration committees, sent a letter first shared with MS NOW to Todd Blanche, the attorney general, and Harmeet Dhillon, who heads the department's civil rights division. They want internal documents, communications and correspondence tied to the deployments, along with a briefing, memoranda, training materials, and details on their destinations and duties.

The push follows a complaint from Wyoming's Republican governor, Mark Gordon, who described the conduct of Justice Department monitors during the state's primary as "a bit aggressive" and "irregular." Gordon said he had asked the state's attorney general, Keith Kautz, to examine why the monitors came.

Dhillon, speaking to Real America's Voice, said the observers would not interfere with the election and that the department would "take care" of any problems afterward, calling the effort the biggest of its kind in the department's history. Similar deployments occurred during the Biden administration, in 2022 and 2024. Because Democrats are in the minority, Blanche and Dhillon are not obliged to answer, but the letter previews how the two committees might probe the administration if Democrats win the House in November. Raskin told MS NOW that President Donald Trump has spent months seeking ways to "sabotage" the midterms, and called the monitors his next step.
