UCLA Law Discriminated Against White And Asian Students, DOJ Says

Latest News DAILY CALLER POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

The Justice Department says UCLA School of Law broke federal civil rights law by weighing race in admissions, putting white and Asian applicants at a disadvantage. According to the Daily Caller News Foundation, which learned of the findings first, the Civil Rights Division is alleging bias in the selection of the 2023, 2024 and 2025 incoming classes. The department says this violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Supreme Court's 2023 ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard.

Investigators say the application's personal statements and essay prompts were designed to draw out an applicant's race, and that admissions staff coached prospective applicants on how to signal it during race-focused recruiting events. The department also says white and Asian applicants were turned down even though their LSAT scores matched those of black and Hispanic applicants who were admitted. In 2024 and 2025 combined, half of the black admits scored no higher than 90% of the white admits' level.

Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon told the news foundation that the school applies different academic standards by race and that the department will keep enforcing equal treatment.
