Usha Vance And Sarah Sanders Join Forces For A Classroom Comeback

Second Lady Usha Vance is traveling to Arkansas on Tuesday to appear with Republican Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, part of Vance's continuing push to get American kids reading for fun and to thank the teachers who work with them. The trip matters because Vance has made literacy her signature cause, and Sanders has been pushing her own education agenda at the state level, according to Daily Wire.

The schedule starts at Glenview Elementary School in North Little Rock, with classroom stops, then a roundtable involving state education leaders and a read-aloud for a school assembly. In the evening, teachers who earned payouts through the Merit Teacher Incentive Fund will be honored at the Governor's Mansion.

Vance says she took up the issue because of falling reading scores and the draw of screens, and she notes that she runs no agency and has no large budget, so her strength is convening people who will act. Her Summer Reading Challenge asked students to finish 12 books and drew entrants from all 50 states, more than twice the prior summer's turnout. She also hosts a podcast called "Storytime with the Second Lady."
