WATCH LIVE: Gov. Scott, challenger Janoo face off in Vermont governor debate

Latest News PBS NEWSHOUR POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

Vermont voters get a direct comparison of their governor and his main rival on Wednesday, when Republican Gov. Phil Scott meets Democrat Amanda Janoo in a debate. PBS NewsHour reports that Vermont Public is carrying it live beginning at 7 p.m. EDT, with Mikaela Lefrak, host of Vermont Edition, asking the questions.

Janoo, an economist, earned the Democratic nomination by beating Aly Richards in the August primary. Her party is making yet another try at denying Scott a new term. He has held the office since 2017, and if voters send him back in November and he serves the full two years, he would have been Vermont's longest-serving governor since the state joined the Union in 1791.

There is also a sign that handicappers see the contest as somewhat less lopsided than before. Last week the Cook Political Report with Amy Walter downgraded Scott's position, shifting the race out of the Solid Republican column and into Likely Republican.
