Mary Trump Warns Donald Trump Is Checking Every Box for America's 'Suicide'
The president's niece says the tech billionaires backing him "don't believe in America." The top 0.1 percent now hold 15 percent of the nation's wealth.

Mary Trump said her uncle, President Donald Trump, is steering the U.S. toward self-destruction. She pointed to tech billionaires' growing wealth, climate damage and the way he treats the country's allies, its adversaries, its schools and its science.
"It seems like America and certainly Donald is doing everything in his power to check off all of the boxes that will lead to the suicide of America," she said on The Mary Trump Podcast.
She was talking with historian Timothy Snyder, the author of On Tyranny, and the word came from him. A few months ago, she said, Snyder spoke about "superpower or suicide or attempted suicide." Mary Trump cited the phrase before she made her own argument. "These are choices we've made," she said. "Voters chose to put him in office again."
Mary Trump Targets Tech 'Oligarchs'
The host said power now sits with a very small group. She said money "is increasingly concentrated in a smaller number of people," and that this puts "those tech bro oligarchs beyond the realm of the human." She also said the climate crisis is "being hastened and exacerbated by the people currently in power."
By the end of the interview, she had moved from the billionaires' economics to their loyalty. "They don't believe in America," she said.
The sharper charge was Snyder's. He described the president as "just kind of a sock puppet at this point for tech bros and more sock puppetish all the time, which is why they love him," and added: "Because he is weak and malleable." He went on: "You just have to flatter him a little bit and he does what you want."
What Tech Billionaires Have Spent
The campaign finance record shows how much money is behind the argument. Elon Musk spent more than $250 million to help elect Trump in 2024, NBC News reported from Federal Election Commission filings. Most of it went through his America PAC.
The money has continued in the 2026 cycle. Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz each gave $12.5 million to Leading the Future, a pro-AI super PAC, which with its affiliated groups took in $50.8 million, according to Bloomberg Government. Musk has also given $76 million to America PAC since July, and the PAC is building a canvassing program aimed at hard-to-reach Republican voters.
Snyder went further and said of billionaires, "They're not paying any taxes at all." That overstates the case. Still, a 2021 ProPublica analysis of leaked IRS data found that the 25 richest Americans paid $13.6 billion in federal income tax from 2014 to 2018 while their wealth grew by $401 billion. That is a "true tax rate" of 3.4 percent.
Wealth at the Top Has Climbed
Mary Trump's point about concentration is backed by the Federal Reserve's own figures. The top 0.1 percent of households held 15 percent of U.S. net worth in the second quarter of 2026, according to the Fed's Distributional Financial Accounts. Their share was 8.6 percent when the series began in 1989.
These are household net worth shares by wealth percentile, not income; the 2026 figure is the latest quarterly estimate.

What Mary Trump Named and What She Didn't
The host accused Trump of how he "mistreats our allies" and said his administration is "undermining and destroying education and turning away from the sciences." She did not name any specific programs or cuts.
The record has some. Trump signed an order on March 20, 2025 to begin dismantling the Education Department, though closing it fully would need an act of Congress. Congressional negotiators rejected his proposed cuts to the National Institutes of Health, and a spending compromise released in January would raise NIH funding by $415 million.
The argument comes as the president's numbers sag. Trump's approval stands at 38 percent, with 59.1 percent disapproving, in PolitiKool's polling average. Democrats lead the generic congressional ballot by 8.1 points in PolitiKool's polling average.
What Comes After November
Snyder said he expects Democrats to win the midterms. He urged them to pass bills that show what government can do, even if Trump vetoes them, and to work toward getting "money out of politics" after they take power.
Mary Trump told him it is often moments in history "in which things are the most dire" when "the opportunities for great positive change exist." Snyder put the choice more bluntly: "something better or nothing at all."
