GOP firebrand Luna joins California Democrat Khanna in surprising push to overhaul workplace rules
Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida and Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California have teamed up on legislation to void non-compete agreements for anyone earning under $100,000 a year. Within 30 days of enactment, the Workers' Right To Compete Act would bar both new and existing agreements, freeing affected workers to take other jobs, according to Fox Business.
Khanna told Fox News Digital the proposal should be easy to support, and said Vice President JD Vance has called such agreements unenforceable. Luna said the measure would give independent contractors and other workers freedom to advance their careers without needless legal obstacles.
Khanna said KKR & Co. barred its acquired companies from using such restrictions on workers under $100,000 and saw better performance. KKR's Pete Stavros told Bloomberg that economists believe non-competes hold down pay, and research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis in 2021 found Oregon's hourly workers saw raises of 2–3% once enforcement stopped. Khanna also credited California's ban with fueling startups, arguing Anthropic's Dario Amodei could not have left OpenAI to launch the company under a non-compete, and said big tech needs more competition.
