Jim Jordan, Steve Scalise Set To Wrestle For Top House GOP Spot After Mike Johnson Steps Aside

Latest News DAILY CALLER POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

Republican leaders in the House are heading toward a contest over who will guide the party from the minority. Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan each entered the race on Wednesday, one day after Democrats won back control of the chamber in the midterm elections. Speaker Mike Johnson said he would not pursue a leadership post. The two contenders will meet in a vote next Tuesday for minority leader in the 120th Congress, according to Daily Caller.

Scalise pitched himself as ready to start immediately and set a goal of winning back the majority in 2028. He said Democrats would pursue impeachment of President Donald Trump and also go after the president's family, cabinet officials and allies, and he promised to coordinate with the administration and committee chairs to undermine those inquiries. Scalise became majority leader in 2023 and earlier served as whip.

Jordan, who has chaired the Judiciary Committee since Jan. 3, 2023, told colleagues in a letter that he knows how Democrats operate and urged unity. He helped found the House Freedom Caucus, which frequently clashed with Johnson. The two men also both sought the speakership after Kevin McCarthy was removed in October 2023, but neither prevailed.
