Majority Voters Want AI Development Slowed As Trump Brokers Safety Pact With Tech CEOs
Most American voters want artificial intelligence reined in, according to a Plymouth Union Public Research survey first obtained by the Daily Caller. The findings arrive right after President Donald Trump met technology executives at the White House and secured their signatures on a voluntary safety agreement.
Plymouth Union polled 1,000 likely voters from Sept. 25-28, with a 3. 1 percent margin of error. About 72 percent support slowing AI development, and 79 percent want companies and government to manage its growth together. Seventy percent favor some form of monitoring, while roughly 62 percent think AI could destroy humanity. Opinion on the technology itself is divided: 43 percent are excited about it and 39 percent are not. More than 60 percent say they knowingly use it daily.
Trump called the pact "morally binding." It sets a light-touch approach in which companies build internal safeguards and hire an independent outside auditor to judge whether those measures work. He also created the Super Intelligence Force, headed by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, with Andrew Ferguson, Emil Michael and Scott Kupor assisting.
