Many GOP states have imposed new voting rules this year, some mirroring Trump's midterm proposals

Latest News ABC NEWS · PBS NEWSHOUR POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

ABC News · PBS NewsHour and PBS NewsHour report that Republican-controlled states are enforcing more than three dozen voting laws for the first time this year, many echoing proposals President Donald Trump could not get enacted before the midterms. Trump's push for a federal citizenship-proof law, a national ID order and Postal Service limits on mail voting all fell short in time. Supporters, especially on voter ID, call the state measures common sense steps that build trust.

New Hampshire no longer accepts student IDs, a change state Rep. Donald McFarlane sponsored. Ohio now requires proof of citizenship at Bureau of Motor Vehicles registrations and ended its four-day grace period for mail ballots. Freda Levenson of the ACLU of Ohio, which is suing, warns that outdated citizenship databases endanger eligible voters, while Republican state Sen. Theresa Gavarone, a sponsor, defends the law as answering a real problem. In South Dakota, where the ACLU is also suing, Kathryn Johnson of the League of Women Voters of South Dakota said, "Proof of citizenship in itself is not terrible," but objected to in-person ID presentation.
