Midterm election betting hits record $1.4B as prediction platforms go mainstream

Latest News THE INDEPENDENT POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

Americans have put more than $1.4 billion into wagers on this year's midterm elections, a record for U.S. election betting, according to the platforms and industry research. Prediction markets, where traders buy and sell yes-or-no contracts on race outcomes, first drew wide notice in 2024, when they pointed toward a Donald Trump presidential win ahead of the polls, according to The Independent.

Individual bettors vary widely. Noah Poser, 28, a financial technology worker who wrote a self-published book on market strategy, has six-figure positions on strong Democratic results and could earn up to $30,000. Yadin Eldar, a 22-year-old Florida State University student, expects Democrats to do well overall but targets Republican contenders he considers underpriced, and he finds the swings stressful. Darius Gamble, 51, of Gardendale, Alabama, caps his stakes at $20 and calls the activity gambling dressed up as forecasting.

The industry is also gaining legitimacy. A October conference in New York drew more than 2,000 attendees, and Kalshi sponsored a Futures Industry Association event. Lucas Kohorst of Adjacent Markets says the sector has entered the mainstream. In Las Vegas, where Nevada sharply limits such offerings, bar owner Peter Klamka is hosting an election night gathering.
