Most Americans Think Trump Is Profiting From the Presidency Illegally or Unethically, Poll Finds

Latest News TIME POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

A new AP-NORC survey finds that most Americans believe President Donald Trump is making money from his office in ways that are illegal or at least unethical. Roughly 40% of the 2,140 adults polled between Sept. 24 and 28 say he has broken the law, and 18% more call his conduct unethical though lawful. Fifty-six percent say he has put his own business interests first "a lot," while 23% say he has put the country first and 11% say he has put people like them first. Few Republicans, about one in ten, think he has done anything illegal, though many said they lacked enough information to judge, according to Time.

Raymond La Raja, a University of Massachusetts Amherst professor, told Time the growth in the president's wealth is largely without precedent. He pointed to a business tied to the United Arab Emirates royal family putting half a billion dollars into Trump's crypto ventures, and to a June 30 disclosure showing more than $1. 4 billion in earnings from those ventures last year. A separate August UMass poll found 53% ranking the presidency as government's most corrupt institution.

La Raja said tolerance for perceived corruption fades when prosperity fails to materialize.
