Most Americans think Trump is using presidency to enrich himself, poll finds

Latest News THE GUARDIAN POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

A new Washington Post-ABC survey finds that two-thirds of Americans, 66%, believe Donald Trump is using the presidency to line his own pockets. That includes 34% of Republicans, and the share has climbed 12 points since last September. The poll also puts the president's approval rating at 33%, a new low, as he travels the country campaigning for vulnerable Republicans ahead of November's midterm elections, according to The Guardian.

Economic sentiment is bleak. Some 48% of respondents say they are worse off financially than when Trump returned to office in 2025, which the Post says is the largest share to say so about any president in its polling series dating to 1986. Three in four, 75%, describe current conditions as "not so good" or "poor." Democrats hold an edge on economic trust, with 37% favoring them against 28% for Republicans.

Respondents also expressed doubts about democratic norms. Sixty-seven percent say Trump is not committed to press freedom, following the administration's effort to bar CNN, MS Now and Politico from White House grounds, which a federal judge has blocked with a preliminary injunction. Sixty-one percent, up five points from October 2025, say he is not committed to free and fair elections.
