Poll: Americans are anxious, pessimistic and deeply unhappy with Trump ahead of the midterms
Americans are in a sour mood with the midterms approaching, and President Donald Trump is absorbing most of the blame. An NBC News Decision Desk Poll powered by SurveyMonkey finds 71% of adults saying the country is on the wrong track, the highest reading of his second term. His approval stands at 34%, also a second-term low, against 66% disapproval, and 51% strongly disapprove. Among registered voters, approval is 39%, and they favor Democrats for control of Congress 55% to 45%, ahead of the Nov. 3 election.
Democrats are not popular either: 43% of adults see the party favorably, compared with 37% for Republicans. Trump's approval is 76% among Republicans and 21% among independents. Economics drives the gloom. Inflation hit 3.7% last month, 44% say they are worse off than a year ago, and just 14% expect the $5,000 payments Trump has promised if Republicans win. On corruption, 52% call his administration more corrupt than its predecessors, though 56% say both parties are equally guilty.
Adults divide 52% to 48% in favor of impeachment proceedings if Democrats take the House. The poll questioned 19,135 people online between Sept. 28 and Oct. 12.
