Poll: Latino voters swing away from Trump and Republicans
Latino voters, a group that helped return Donald Trump to the White House, have moved sharply against him and his party, an NBC News/Telemundo poll finds. Only 27% of them approve of the president. Democrats lead the congressional preference question 59% to 35%, a margin twice what it was at this point in 2024 but short of what the party held just before the 2018 election. Among Latinos who voted for Trump in 2024, 14% now back Democrats for Congress and 8% are undecided.
Money worries and immigration drive the discontent. Inflation and living costs top the list of concerns for 33%, and 63% say their family income is losing ground to prices. Roughly two-thirds believe his policies have damaged the economy, while two-thirds also think deportation efforts have overreached. Border security is his strongest area, though more disapprove (58%) than approve (39%).
Republicans had built House plans around Latino gains, including new heavily Latino districts in Florida and Texas that now look competitive. Pollsters Aileen Cardona-Arroyo, a Democrat, and Micah Roberts, a Republican, say any Democratic gains owe more to anger at Trump than enthusiasm for Democrats, whose image has not recovered. Roberts concluded that 2024 was "the outlier."
