Republicans win most of the mercy in Trump’s pardons for public officials

Latest News THE INDEPENDENT POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

Donald Trump has used his pardon power to help at least 85 public officials facing or serving time for corruption-related offenses, and a Reuters analysis, as reported by The Independent, finds the benefits flowed mostly to fellow Republicans and supporters of his movement. Of the 85, 36 won office as Republicans and 19 more were Republican appointees, while nine had backed him publicly. Only four were known Democrats. Trump's clemency covered at least 11 of the 15 GOP congressional members convicted of crimes in the last twenty years.

Michele Fiore, a Nevada official, illustrates the pattern. A federal jury in Las Vegas convicted her on seven counts in October 2024 over money raised for a slain officer's memorial, nearly $80,000 of which went to personal expenses. Trump pardoned her before sentencing. She maintains she is innocent and still draws a county justice of the peace salary.

The recipients avoided 130 years of incarceration and more than $15 million in penalties. Former prosecutor Phillip Halpern warns the approach encourages corruption. White House spokesperson Lauren Bis says recipients were wronged by a politicized Justice Department under Joe Biden.
