Senate Leadership In Both Parties Dragging Feet On Using Force Of Law To Rein In Flock

Latest News DAILY CALLER POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

Neither party's Senate leadership has moved to use legal compulsion against Flock Safety, the license plate camera company drawing scrutiny over surveillance and due process. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer sent a letter to Flock CEO Garrett Langley on Sunday asking the company to erase data unrelated to crimes, disclose how much camera data it stores, and say whether federal agencies have tapped it. He did not threaten a subpoena. Majority Leader John Thune and Majority Whip John Barrasso have not taken a firm position or proposed binding action, though Thune said he favors modest guardrails on artificial intelligence. None of the three responded to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Sen. Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican, opened an investigation and held a hearing that Langley and other technology executives skipped. His September letter described Lindsey Isaacs of Florida, jailed 13 days after a Flock camera wrongly connected her car to a deadly crash. In Milwaukee, prosecutors charged an officer accused of repeatedly searching license plates belonging to his girlfriend and her ex.

No bill to ban the cameras outright has been introduced. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna says she is drafting one.
