Senate Republicans’ Top PAC Dropping $1 Million Into Deep-Red Mississippi

Latest News DAILY CALLER POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

A race that Republicans expected to win easily is drawing outside money. The Senate Leadership Fund, the GOP's main Senate campaign committee, is putting more than $1 million into Mississippi, according to a source who spoke with the Daily Caller News Foundation. Semafor first reported the ad buy, which backs Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith against Democratic nominee Scott Colom. It follows a $1.2 million television campaign from Senate Majority PAC on Colom's behalf.

Public polling shows Hyde-Smith ahead by single digits. The New York Times cited a Data for Progress poll from August putting her up six points, and an Impact Research poll from April showing a three-point edge. A separate survey that gave her a four-point lead was withdrawn after Wedgewood Polls said it had invented it as an "experimental project" about misleading the public.

Democrats have sent in high-profile help. Kamala Harris, Raphael Warnock, Bennie Thompson and Barack Obama have all campaigned for or endorsed Colom, and Obama appears in an ad. Donald Trump carried Mississippi by 24 points, and no Democrat has held one of its Senate seats since John Stennis left in 1989. Hyde-Smith won in 2020 with 54.1% to 44.1%.
