Senators Take Aim At Trump’s AI Honor System With Bill That Could Haul Tech Giants Into Court

Latest News DAILY CALLER POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

Two senators from opposite parties, Josh Hawley of Missouri (Republican) and Chris Murphy of Connecticut (Democrat), have introduced legislation that would make the people behind AI agents legally answerable when those agents break into computer systems. It runs against President Donald Trump's approach of relying on the industry to regulate itself, which matters because it would put real legal exposure on technology companies, according to Daily Caller.

Under the proposal, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act would cover hacking damage done by AI agents, reaching both operators and developers who skip precautions. Criminal and civil penalties would apply. The U. S. attorney general and state attorneys general could also sue to halt companies that carry out, or try to carry out, such attacks, according to Hawley's office. Hawley said that if firms build agents that cause havoc, they should be responsible for the damage.

Trump said Tuesday that he and a group of AI executives had voluntarily agreed to an accord on policing the technology themselves, as reported by the Associated Press. At a Senate subcommittee hearing on rogue AI agents, Hawley called frontier models products whose makers should bear responsibility, and Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, a Democrat, called the pledge ineffective.
