These House and Senate midterm races don't have winners yet

Latest News CBS NEWS POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

Democrats swept to a decisive Senate majority in the 2026 midterms and gained dozens of House seats, on pace for one of the biggest midterm routs in recent decades. They are assured of at least 54 Senate seats against 44 for Republicans, though final margins remain uncertain because several contests are still undecided, according to CBS News.

In the Senate, Alaska and Mississippi are outstanding. Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan and Democrat Mary Peltola are separated by a sliver in Alaska, where a scandal over a second Dan Sullivan appearing on the ballot complicates matters, and ranked choice tabulation means final results could take 15 days. In Mississippi, Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Scott Colom remain a toss-up, with mail and affidavit ballots still to be tallied.

On the House side, more than two dozen contests are unresolved. In Maine's 2nd District, Republican Paul LePage fell just under a majority, so a ranked choice count begins Nov. 9 even though Democrat Matt Dunlap conceded. Louisiana's redrawn 6th District could head to a runoff. Other open races include Florida's 9th, where Rep. Darren Soto faces Republican Dan Green, and Colorado's 4th, featuring Rep. Lauren Boebert and Democrat Eileen Laubacher.
