Trump announces $275M nursing-home nurse initiative at Florida midterm rally

Latest News FOX BUSINESS POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

At a midterm campaign rally in Fort Myers, Florida, on Friday, President Donald Trump unveiled a program meant to put more nurses into the country's nursing homes. Called Nurses for Nursing Homes, it totals $275 million and is expected to reach more than 4,000 nurses nationwide, federal health agencies said, according to Fox Business.

Nurses who sign on for three years, averaging at least 30 hours a week at a qualifying facility, can receive as much as $40,000 toward student loans, a $10,000 stipend, or both. Registered nurses and licensed practical or vocational nurses working at Medicare- or Medicaid-certified long-term-care sites are eligible. Students may start applying early but need a license and a job before payment. Applications open Oct. 26.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is providing $100 million and states at least $175 million, drawn from fines levied on nursing homes. CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said the effort proceeds "without taking a dime from taxpayers." Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said it would expand care in rural and high-need communities, which are the priority, and all 50 states and the District of Columbia are taking part.
