Trump cancels his appearance at weekend rally in Kansas days before midterm vote

Latest News THE INDEPENDENT POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

Donald Trump has dropped plans to headline a Saturday event in Salina, Kansas, leaving him with very few in-person campaign stops in the final weekend before the midterms. The White House says he will instead address supporters through more than 20 telephone rallies before Election Day. Whether the Kansas stop will be rescheduled, or whether an Iowa rally planned for Sunday remains on, has not been made clear. The Salina airport's director, Pieter Miller, said every event there was called off because of the change, according to The Independent.

The visit was meant to boost Republican Sen. Roger Marshall, who faces Democratic pastor Adam Hamilton in a tight contest. Kansas has not chosen a Democrat for the Senate since 1939. A CNN/SSRS survey of likely voters released Thursday put Hamilton ahead 49 percent to 45 percent, and Hamilton also has the better favorability score, 41 percent to 36 percent.

Kansas Republican Party leaders played down the cancellation. Executive director Rob Fillion told KWCH that other contests matter too and that reaching several audiences simultaneously may be a better use of the president's time. Party chair Danedri Herbert said the Republican National Committee informed her of the decision.
