Trump clashes ahead as new Supreme Court term begins

Latest News NBC NEWS POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

The Supreme Court begins a new term Monday, and its relationship with President Donald Trump is strained. Over the past several months, the conservative-majority court, which includes three justices he appointed, handed him defeats on tariffs, birthright citizenship, the firing of a Federal Reserve member and his plan to assert control over mail-in ballots before the fall election. Trump responded on Truth Social that the court has "let our country down" and said Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett are shells of their former selves, according to NBC News.

The administration still has much at stake. Immigration cases are central, including a review of its policy of deporting people to third countries where they have no ties. The justices have twice let that policy proceed. An asylum shutdown at the southern border and Trump's appeal of the defamation verdict won by E. Jean Carroll may also reach the court. The administration has also won often on emergency requests, including one that lets White House ballroom construction continue. Of seven such requests this summer, it prevailed on four and lost one. White House spokesperson Lauren Bis maintained that courts have repeatedly found its policies lawful.
