Trump reveals the make of his suit – and it isn’t what people were expecting

Latest News THE INDEPENDENT POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

President Donald Trump drew online attention after a photo from a Monday night rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, showed the tag inside his navy suit jacket. It read Jos. A. Bank, a budget retailer, rather than Brioni, the Italian maker long associated with him. Brioni dressed him on The Apprentice, and in a 2004 book he wrote that he buys its suits off the rack. Hope Hicks, then his campaign spokeswoman, told The New York Times in 2016 that he wore Brioni but also liked other makers, including Brooklyn's Martin Greenfield Clothiers, according to The Independent.

The price gap is wide: Jos. A. Bank suits generally sell for $250 to $580, while Brioni's run from $5,500 to $16,200. Cost is unlikely to matter to the president, since his financial disclosures reportedly put his income last year at no less than $2.2 billion. The Independent has asked the White House for comment.

Critics focused on where the suit was made. Menswear writer Derek Guy said the retailer's suits are produced abroad, in places such as China and Bangladesh, and noted its U.S.-made Joseph Abboud line. Democratic communicator Josh Dorner said the choice came amid Trump's trade war.
