Trump Shares GOP Senator’s Phone Number In Fight For Permanent Daylight Saving Time
President Donald Trump posted Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton's personal cellphone number on Truth Social on Saturday and asked Arkansans to call and press him to support making daylight saving time permanent. Trump said Cotton is blocking the Sunshine Protection Act, which cleared the House 308-117 in July and has since stalled in the Senate. He argued the bill should draw support from both parties and pointed to golfers, tennis players, hunters and farmers as likely beneficiaries. Trump has used a similar approach before: during the 2016 Republican primary he read Sen. Lindsey Graham's number aloud at a campaign event, according to Daily Wire · PBS NewsHour.
Cotton has long resisted the idea. He has said the benefits would flow to a handful of industries in certain regions while the costs would be spread across the whole economy, and he has raised the problem of children heading to school in darkness. Daily Wire reports it has asked Cotton's office for comment. Cotton is not the only skeptic. Senate Majority Leader John Thune was among the members of the Commerce Committee, from both parties, who earlier voted not to move the proposal forward.
