Trump wants snipers and ammunition inside a 250-foot monument — but new plans leave them out

Interior Department records released Monday on President Donald Trump's planned Triumphal Arch contain no reference to the "military complex" he said last September the structure would hold. A department spokesperson, who was not named, said the current design could still handle the national security functions Trump described in his Truth Social post, and more, according to The Independent.

The filings, prepared for a National Capital Planning Commission session two days after the Nov. 3 midterm election, include site maps and renderings of an arch intended to stand 250 feet (76 meters) tall. Asked by the commission about the monument's scale, the National Park Service pointed to the country's approaching 250th anniversary and described the arch as a contribution from the semiquincentennial generation. In September, Trump had said the military asked him to convert it into a facility storing ammunition and drones and offering positions for snipers.

The arch would rise at a circle beside Memorial Bridge, which links Washington with northern Virginia, and it faces legal challenges. Opponents call it oversized and say it would block the line of sight between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
