WATCH LIVE: Sullivan, Peltola face off in Alaska U.S. Senate debate

Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan and Democratic former Rep. Mary Peltola traded sharp attacks over the Iran war, prices and each other's honesty in Thursday's Alaska Senate debate, PBS NewsHour, ABC News and NBC News report. The seat could help decide control of a closely divided Senate, and NBC News rates it a toss-up, according to PBS NewsHour · ABC News.

Both candidates said the war should end soon, NBC News reports. ABC News adds that Sullivan wants the Strait of Hormuz open and a deal keeping Iran from nuclear weapons, while Peltola called an agreement far off and noted the deaths of 20 military personnel. According to NBC News, Sullivan split with the Trump administration over letting Russian diesel reach world markets, citing his sanctions legislation.

Citing New York Times reporting on turmoil in her congressional office, Sullivan said 25 staffers quit over abuse, NBC News reports; Peltola dismissed the stories as "allegations." ABC News says Peltola appeared to read from note cards, prompting Sullivan to question the rules, and a moderator said no questions were shared beforehand. Peltola led the August primary, 49.5% to 41.4%, NBC News says.
