Dem Pastor Running For Senate Urged Church To Declare ‘Black Lives Matter’

Adam Hamilton, the Kansas Democrat challenging Republican Sen. Roger Marshall, has drawn scrutiny over past remarks about race and gender identity made in his role as a United Methodist pastor. Polls show the contest unusually close for a state that has not elected a Democratic senator since the 1930s, and Republicans have redirected some money toward Marshall. Sen. Tim Scott, who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee, recently conceded the race is competitive, Daily Wire reports.

In a September 2018 webinar, Hamilton described urging his largely white congregation to affirm that black lives matter, which led some members to quit the church. He explained that the phrase is needed because many black Americans doubt their lives are valued, while no one doubts that about white lives. He also spoke of the difficulty of addressing racism in rural areas, citing Confederate flags he had noticed in Missouri.

In a February 2019 talk on sexual ethics, he said he was unsure what advice to give parents of young children who identify as transgender. Hamilton's campaign told the Daily Wire he was not calling anyone racist and had also said white lives and blue lives matter.
