Senate control is a coin flip — and Democrats’ path runs through Trump Country

Latest News FOX NEWS POLITIKOOL · LATEST NEWS

Six days before the midterms, control of the Senate is essentially a toss-up, according to the final Fox News Power Rankings, and Democrats' best chances of winning it lie in states Donald Trump carried in 2024. Republicans hold a 53-47 edge now, but they face the historical tendency of the president's party to lose seats, along with stubborn inflation partly linked to the unpopular Iran war and Trump's sagging approval.

The forecast puts each party three seats shy of a majority, with Democrats favored in 48 races and Republicans in 47. Because Vice President JD Vance breaks ties, Republicans need only 50 seats to stay in charge. A strong Democratic wave could deliver as many as 53 seats, while a strong Republican showing could preserve a majority of up to 52.

Three ratings changed in this final update. Ohio is now seen as leaning toward Democrats rather than a pure toss-up, South Carolina has become somewhat less safe for Republicans, and Mississippi has likewise slipped a notch in the GOP's direction of caution. In Ohio, former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown is challenging appointed Republican Sen. Jon Husted for the remaining two years of a term Vance won in 2022.
